Faerun as a continent is generally divided into 11 clear regions, 8 of which are agreed to be "civilised" with the remaining three still recovering from major natural disasters.
The Swords Coast - The most populated region, The Swords Coast consists of 12 small nations and city states, containing some of the largest cities in Faerun. It's culture is broadly influenced by Waterdeep, the largest of these cities. The most widespread languages are Illuskan, Chondathan, Espruar, Telpi, and Dethek.
The Island Nations - The region with the most Elves, after the great war in mainland Faerun. There are 6 main island nations, with two more small independent islands and a smattering of Amnian colonies. The most widespread languages are Waelan, Espruar, Seldruin, Illuskan, Alzhedo and Azuposi.
The Heartlands - This region in central Faerun is known for it's military might. It consists of 4 main nations, though Cormyr is far larger and more powerful than it's neighbours, and is the home of both the Purple Dragon Knights and the War Wizards. The most widespread languages are Chondathan, Netherese, Sembian, and Espruar.
The Moonsea - The last bastions of the Shield Dwarves are in the Moonsea region, in the nation of Vaasa. Technologically advanced the region is capable but sparsely populated. The most widespread languages are Dethek, Damaran, Netherese, Tharian, Erakic, and Espruar.
The Lands Of Intrigue - This region is famed for having strict laws concerning arcane magic, fearing the fate of the Plaguelands could happen again. One of the larger regions and the richest region, it holds a lot of international sway and is the leader in intercontinental exploration. The most widespread languages are Thorass, Alzhedo, and Turmic.
The Unapproachable East - Named because of it's heavily restrictive systems of government. This region is known for slavery and the use of magic most other regions find objectionable, from the curses of the Rashemi to the necromancy of Thay. The region has 6 major nations, all of which well known for their military might. The most widespread languages are Aglarondan, Naric, Thayan, and Rasallesian; it is unusual to hear languages from West Faerun such as Chondathan or Thorass here.
The Red Lands - Religious differences keep the Red Lands from being fully integrated into Faerunian culture. Only one nation maintains an open border; Mulhorand. The rest consider the countries of Faerun heretical and do little business, as such the largest nation in the region Semphar is often omitted from maps entirely as few maps go beyond the Plains Of Purple Dust. There are many languages here. Mulhorani is the most likely heard in Faerun, but the most widespread are Roushoum, Durpari, and Chessentan. Other languages include Raumvira, Tuigan, Untheric, and Imaskari.
The Serpent Kingdoms - In the far south lays the remains of the Serpent Kingdoms, nations formed by monstrous lizard like races; the Lizardmen and Yuan-Ti. These races are tribal, and since the earthquake much of the Mihair landmass in under sea level. The remaining nations are small and generally ignored by the humanoid races. The most widespread languages are Akurian, and Eshowan amongst non humans; and Thorass amongst humans.
The Shining South - What's left of the south of Faerun is still rebuilding, and the Shining South is the closest to a success story in that regard. It consists of 3 nations and a lot of ruins. The most widespread languages are Dethek, Chessentan, Akalan, and Sespechian
The Shaar - Often referred to as the Shaar Desolation much of the vegetation here died following the formation of Underchasm, while the once great nation of Halruaa in the south was sunk by rising seas. The few nomadic tribes in the area still speak Shaaran, but the region is considered a wasteland by most.
The Plaguelands - Often called "The Old Kingdoms" out of respect, this region was destroyed by the earthquake and formation of Underchasm, and then ravaged by the full brunt of the spellplague. Many consider the land uninhabitable and people who spend time there develop strange illnesses. Once the most prosperous region in Faerun and the site of the most advanced human nation, the Kingdom Of Chondath; it is now nothing but ruins and ghost stories.
I thought Dethek, Espruar and Thorass were alphabets, not languages...
ReplyDeleteThorass used to be a language, yes, but it just became the name of the alphabet.
Thank you for this! I have been wanting a look at more of Faerun than just the Sword coast! This is so helpful.
